UPDATE (22/10/2012): It seems the IconDatabase guys have listened to what we have said and have already changed the front page of the site. Just a couple of hours after this was published. Since it was the only bad thing I had to say about it I am happy to report that it has indeed changed and looks so much better for it. No doubt over the coming weeks you will continue to see improvements all over the site.
We all love to tinker with the look of our phones. Some of us do it more than others but all of us search for those themes and icons to help make our devices more ‘us’.
Finding icons can be difficult at times, There is just so much out there it can be hard to get a grip and find just what you are looking for. This is where IconDatabase hopes to help you out.
In their own words thay are a “ community-driven database of free icons. (Their) goal is to have a centralized place where people can easily find icons for their apps, searching by set, app, color, or style.” Currently they have 63 icon sets and 24,250 icons, however that might have risen since. New icons are being added on a regular basis. Their advice is to check back regularly to see what is now.
When you first arrive at the site things do not look that great. I found once I got past my first impression from the home page what was underneath was much better. As you can see before you is a search box with options to filter what sort of icons you are looking for. This I feel is a great feature, I just do not see why it is offered up on the home page. That aside the search options are really impressive. You can search by App icon name, Artist name, Icon Pack and Colour.
I found to get the most out of the site I had to start hunting around the Icons drop-down menu at the top. Here it gives you links to Icon Packs and Artists in a much more organized way. Now that I am writing this I can’t help but think if the large Search section at the top was moved to the side and there was links to jump to view all the Artists or Icon Packs it would be a much more attractive Front Page. It might also help people find their way around easier, not to mention it might help draw more people in. When you do get into the other sections of the site it is all well laid out and attractive.
I think this is a great site. Yes it is still early days and they have a little bit of work to do the content is there. And the content will keep growing. So bookmark the site and check regularly there is bound to be something of use for you.
