That trial that everyone is talking about

image

So the trial is over and everyone is talking about it.

I just want to say that this is the only post we are writing on the topic.

We are not going to be talking about it. Everyone else is. I even turned off G+ earlier because I was so sick of reading the same thing over and over.

No doubt over the next couple of days most Android sites of there will be talking so much about this you will get sick and tired. Well we won’t be talking about it. Instead we will be trying to find interesting and different things to talk about.

If you want to read the same story over and over again – there are many, many sites to offer you that.

We at Droidaphile offer you something different. So the next time you hear someone complain about all this trial coverage send them this way.

Awesome collection of Superhero Icons

So you have watched the latest Batman film twice, Avengers 5 times and are waiting for the new Superman film to come out. What are you going to do to tide you over till then?

Thanks to Xda icon creator helix massacre you can give your phone that ‘Super’ look with these Superhero icon packs.

At the moment there is 7 packs to choose from – Dark Knight (Batman), Superman, Deadpool, Captain America, Hulk, Thor and Iron Man.

I really like the clean cut feel form them. And they are all designed in the way that makes it easy to either just use one set or mix and match from different sets.

Lets hope there are more sets to come. There is so much potential to be had here – Spiderman, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Punisher, Ghost Rider. I am not sure how some of them could be done, if at all though.

If these are just what you are looking to fill the void until the next Avengers trailer is released head on over to the Xda thread and pick these up. All packs and wallpapers can be found there. And do not forget to say thanks while you are there.

Text Genie – helping you understand what those pesky kids are saying

Since the dawn of texting on mobile phones a style of speaking has emerged that to this day still leaves me baffled. Perhaps it is because I am not a teen, or even that I think ‘later’ should not be spelt ‘ltr’ or however it is spelt.

From time time once of my friends will send me a text full of nonsense as far as I am concerned and I have to ask them to explain to me in plain English what they are trying to tell me.

Now there is an app for that. Text Genie will convert all those strange jumble of letters for you so that will know that “ilbl8 2nyt” means “I’ll be late tonight” and “1dRfl” means “wonderful”. It has a built in translator of over 1500 ‘words’ (note I use the term words loosely) and there is also the option to add in your own terms that are not already listed.

For parents and those who like me have no idea what some people are saying in their texts I can see this being a great tool. And all of this will only cost you a piddly 89p.

So if you are sick of your kids confusing you when they text head over to the Play Store where this can be yours for 89p.

(Updated) SMS Wakeup – it is the small apps that make life all the better

“There is an app for that.”

A phrase I never tire of saying or tire of hearing about Android. No matter what you want your phone, or tablet, to do there is an app for the job. If your phone does not do everything you could ever possibly want out of the box then somewhere someone has made an app to do what you need. And I am pretty sure that if you can think of something that there is no app someone will make one sooner or later.

SMS WakeUp by dberm22 is one of those apps. When Google first revealed the new UI for their messaging app in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich we finally had a message app that looked as it should. But gone was the one thing I was used to the most. My screen lighting up.

I had been using, like many others, 3rd party SMS apps. One of their greatest featues was when a new messages was recieved the screen would turn on for a few seconds. I am not talking about a pop-up of the the message, just a simple screen on for a few seconds before turning off again.

After a night moaning on G+ about there being no app just to turn screen on, or at least no app that I could find, my friend Keith introduced me to SMS WakeUp. And life was good again.

Once you install it, it is a free app, all you have to do is open it once and that is it. No crazy menus to figure out or settings to bypass – it just works. If you are using a 3rd party SMS app it tells you how to get SMS WakeUP to work with them.

If you do decide to jump into the settings what you are faced with is the option to change the screen on time from 0.5 seconds to 10 second, with 7.5 seconds being the default. There is also the option to have the screen turn on at full brightness, that however is turned off by default.

For me I would have happily paid money for this app. In the screenshot above you can see that he asks that if you like the app you might consider going and buy his paid app 3D Metal Theme for ADW Ex in the Play Store. It is a great looking icon pack that not only works works with Adw but other popular replacement launchers such as Nova, Apex and others. And it is only 65p.

This is a great little app. If this is the sort of thing you have been looking for then your search is now over. Head over to the Play Store and install it. I recently updated to Jelly Bean one of the first apps I went to install was this and found it was now listed as ‘incompatible with my device’. I fired an email off to David, the developer behind SMS WakeUp, explaining that I could no longer download it and within the hour he had sent me a copy. As a result of this if you head to the play Store and find your unable to install it fear not as we here at Droidaphile can provide you with a direct download.

Now since I have to I do have to address the small issues I have with it. First is the UI. It is not the best. However it was designed, from the looks of it, during the days of Gingerbread and has not been updated to current UI guidelines. An update of the UI, along with some other features, is something David expressed to me that would be coming at some point in the future all being well. While it is something I am bringing up I do not feel that it is an issue really. Most people will install it, open it and never look at it again and never even go into the settings as it just works as is.

And that is it. Nothing more to say other than this is the reason I love Android so much. Because if your phone does not do it out of the box “there is an app for that.”

UPDATE 15/09/12:

SMS WakeUp got a little update bringing the UI into line with Android Holo guidelines and a Pro version has also been released with a few new features. Check out all the details here

[NSFW] Planet Pron – a new player in the adult app section

We are going to talk about porn and Android. Do I need to give you a moment to stop giggling like a teenager? That is better. After all we are all adults here, if you are not an adult stop reading now.

Porn is no longer something hidden away in dark seedy shops, sold in brown paper bags. A quick look at the Waterstones Bestselling lists shows Fifty Shades of Grey and it’s sequels sitting in the top 3 places. Waterstones, not some seedy bookshop. Reports show that healthy couples enjoy watching porn together and between them engage in some kind of sexual activity using their mobile phones.

When it comes to porn on Android there is not a lot of options. There is the likes of MiKandi, which acts like a hub for material however it is not cheap and some of the content is terrible, or you search around the net and install who knows what really. Installing apps like this is a gateway to who knows what. Malware and spy-ware – we here at Droidaphile always encourage people to be safe and to always think about why every app needs every permission. I have come across Live Wallpaper and Font Changer apps that ask for permission to make phone calls and to send text messages.

What I am trying to say is finding safe, quality adult material for Android is not that easy.

Enter Planet Pron.

Planet Pron, is very straightforward, has no malicious or intrusive content, and has a bunch of other benefits/features which we think make it awesome.

Speaking to the team behind it they informed me that “…that there is a need for an app like this, just no one has made it yet.” And the response they were getting over on Xda was great until it was closed down. The demand is there I am told.

So what is the end product like? What does is claim to be…well-

The #1 Porn App for Android

Safe & Discreet
Over 200,000 Videos & Pictures
Decoy Icon & Password Locking
Save Your Favorites
No fussing over browser history/cookies
Tumblr-style Feed of Your Categories

Firstly, you are never going to find this in the Google Play Store. You need to head over to the Planet Pron website, there you are given the option of 2 versions of the app. The standard and a ‘decoy’ version. This is a nice touch in my mind. Those of you who have kids will not want to expose them an app sitting in your drawer of your phone that says Pron. No parent wants to have that talk with their kid. And there will be some people who will not want that chat with their other half either.

Next upon launching the app you are faced with a screen asking you to confirm that you are over the age of 18. Again, I like this. To me it shows lots of thought on a serious legal level has been put into this. That the devs behind it are being responsible.

Once you get into the app you will find it is well laid out, easy to follow and looks good (the layout and design not the the content – get your mind out of the gutter). A quick jump into the settings are given the option to set up a password lock to stop unwanted eyes getting access. Here you also have the option to upgrade your subscription from a free user to Pro or Premium. Upgrading gives you faster load times, higher quality videos and full screen videos and pictures – along with a few other bits and pieces.

I am sure you are asking why there is no pictures, the simple reason is we cannot show you any. I know you will all understand – Ed.

With over 40 categories to choose from, no Henti though. I had a couple of people say to me they were surpried that there was not a henti section, there will surely be something to suit your needs or mood. With more content being added every single day.

So the question is: Does Planet Pron deliver their promise of bringing a good, safe adult app to Android?

I think yes.

They address the personal security of having an app like this on your phone with not only password locking but also a dummy icon to protect you. On the FAQ of their website they explain the permissions the app needs. The content is good. There is no limits on how much of the app you can use for a free user.

So if you are sick of shoddy adult apps and are looking for something better hit the link below.

And remember this is an adults app – no minors

Star Trek ToDo Agenda (small time developer being threatened because they have ToDo in their name)

I do not really know where to begin with this one. I have spent the last 20 minutes with laughing or trying to calm down from the rage I am feeling towards iOS developers Appigo.

Allow me to explain. Stanim, a small developer for Android received an email from Appigo claiming that his use of “ToDo” was infringing on their copyright. Over the last few years anyone who has followed the mass amount of lawsuits will have seen their fair share of stupid claims. But this up there for one of the most stupid I have ever heard.

I am not going to go into all the detail. If you want to find out more please head over to Android Police and read their exelecnt writeup about it.

What I do want to do is shine some light on this app. I encourage everyone to head over to the Play Store and download it now. Show some support to stanim. I mean come on, it looks cool, that is enough for you to decide you want it.
